White Out Lung Cancer

Hello!

I am a proud member of the Class of 2011. Whilst on campus, we were the Queens of Can Art, expert Crook Hunt seekers, and part of that ODD group of fearless women. It’s been over a year since we left Wonderland, and most of us still feel like we’re back ‘home’ when we turn onto the front drive. During my last semester at Meredith, I lost my mom to lung cancer after a short five month battle. She was diagnosed in September, just a month after I returned from an unforgettable study abroad experience. It was an earth-shaking even for me. I struggled to finish my semester but felt more deserving than ever when I turned my onyx on that rainy day in May.

During my first year out of school, I did a lot of searching: searching for ‘myself’, searching for a job, searching for a new normalcy outside of the Meredith gates. I found myself volunteering with the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership, photographing a few of their events. It was a great outlet for me to positively channel my grief. I noticed that there was a whole demographic that the partnership was missing: young women. I wanted to create an event that did two things: raise awareness amongst lung cancer for young women and celebrate and honor my mom’s life.

Combining my studies in fashion design and theatre and my mom’s love of fashion, White Out Lung Cancer was created. On June 15th at Burning Coal Theatre in Downtown Raleigh, local designers, mostly Meredith students and alumnae, will join our sponsoring boutiques in a fashion show benefiting the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership. Irongate Winery will be providing a wine tasting to kick-off the evening, in combination with a silent auction featuring items by many local artist and opening night tickets to see Christie Brinkley star in Chicago at DPAC! My hope is to sell the house out, and I’d love to see my fellow Meredith sisters at the event.
